Travelling

Around four million people in the UK still drive less than three miles to work – that’s about a 20-minute bike ride each way.

Get on your bike!

Man on bike

Get fit, save time and help the environment. If every one of these people swapped their car for a bike it would save around one million tonnes of CO2 a year. Statistics from the Department for Transport also show that cycling per mile travelled is safer than walking. Find out if you qualify for a tax-free bike under the Cycle to Work scheme.

Explore your own backyard

Instead of jetting off this year, why not have an adventure closer to home? The UK and Europe offer an amazing array of experiences for the average holiday maker, most accessible by train. Have a look at the Guardian website for some green travel inspiration. Or ask the Man in Seat61 how to get to pretty much anywhere by train. The environmental effects of flying are well known. As a general rule, try to reduce the number of plane trips you take and try not to use a plane for any trips under 1,000 km.

Work from home

The average UK commute takes 45 minutes  and is responsible for around 2.5% of our total carbon emissions.

Could you work from home? Some workplaces offer employees the chance to consolidate their working week, allowing them to reduce their energy consumption, cut their commute and giving them more time to decide what to do with that extra day in the week.
