Teaching and learning resources
Our resources use innovative approaches to teaching and learning that build pupils’ knowledge and understanding, and engage them in meaningful practical work. We work in partnership with a range of organisations and educators to develop new materials that support learning for sustainability in primary and secondary schools.
Our approach
Our resources are based on the action learning cycle, which has five stages: excite, expand, explore, engage and evaluate. Through the cycle of activities, pupils work individually and collaboratively to build knowledge, values, attitudes, understanding and self-confidence to take action on a range of sustainability issues.
The resources are designed to support the delivery of the National Curriculum and GCSE and A-level assessment objectives. They have been developed with specialist teachers and trialled in classrooms.
Our new teaching and learning resources
Big Challenge – WEEE solution has been developed in partnership with DHL Envirosolutions. Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is the fastest growing part of the UK waste stream. This KS2 resource raises key questions about our use of electrical and electronic products, product life cycles and recycling. It challenges pupils to develop an effective campaign to improve WEEE recycling in their school community. Schools within the company’s service area also qualify to enter an annual community campaign competition. The materials are available from DHL Envirosolutions.
One Planet Packaging has been developed in partnership with Weedon Packaging Solutions Center and i2ieurope. As consumers around the world are demanding innovative packaging that is both effective and environmentally sustainable, young designers have an exciting opportunity to shape the future of the packaging industry. This resource supports GCSEs in Design and Technology, including Product design, Resistant Materials Technology, and Graphic Products. Download the free resource (June 2011)
Energy Smart Challenge has been developed in partnership with Tesco. The challenge of reducing home energy use will require a range of new technologies and home behaviours. This Year 8 resource prepares pupils to design and test a range of home energy conservation measures. Through the Tesco Community Champions programme, loan boxes with classroom sets of home smart energy meters are available to use for free. The resource and loan boxes will be available soon (September 2011).
