Laura Laker
I’m Laura, a freelance journalist and part-time eco-doer in East London. I have been passionate about the environment in one way or another since rescuing the school frogs from certain death at the hands of some excitable classmates, aged 6.
Since then I’ve been fascinated by the way nature and humans interact; when this balance works and when it doesn’t.
Shortly after moving to London I became involved in a Transition Town group, in a desire to do something practical that made me feel good. Within weeks I was pioneering fruit tree growing on a North London railway station and writing about it. I also connected with a wonderful community of people I would never have met otherwise.
Last year I fell into an internship as e-newsletter editor at the London Cycling Campaign, which changed my opinion about how we can make life – particularly city life – better through sustainable transport. This also inspired me to start a series of cycling blogs, where I try to share the fun I experience travelling around London on my bike.
Through combining my writing and love of the environment I hope I can show how much joy can come from sustainable living and feeling connected with the world around us. My work has shown me places and people where the norm is to value everything and waste nothing. I hope I can continue to share my passion into the future, to show people that, as well as a practical solution, helping to protect our environment is immensely rewarding.
