Gardening
Gardens come in all shapes and sizes. But whether you have a field or a window box, gardening is a great way to relax and reconnect with nature.
Grow your own
With even the smallest amount of space, you can grow a surprising variety of flowers and food. Peas, potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, radishes and cucumbers all grow well in containers. Whether you’re looking to grow the vegetables for a Sunday roast or the mint for your Mojito, you can find a lot of information and practical guides on the internet. Try the BBC Gardening website for gardens of all sizes. You can also visit Garden Guides for some container garden inspiration.
Get your water for free!
Collecting rainwater is one of the simplest ways to cut down on water wastage in the garden. This can be as simple as leaving a jar on your window sill for your window box herb garden or investing in a water butt for your vegetable patch. It’s free and it’s falling out of the sky, why not use it?
Community gardening
If don’t have a garden or green space, city farms and community gardens, run by local people and volunteers, are designed to build community relationships and promote an awareness of gardening and farming. They often exist in urban areas where they may be a lack of green space and most projects provide food-growing activities, training courses, school visits, community allotments and community businesses.
The Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens has a searchable database that can put you in touch with your local farm or garden.
