Encourage intrinsic values

Encouraging intrinsic values is about strengthening the altruistic values for the collective good among people, businesses and government.

By altruistic or intrinsic values we mean the importance we place upon things like our family, friends, communities and society, as well as to the environment and our planet, rather than acting for self interest.

When we support and engage with local communities to encourage positive change we recommend as far as possible that our programmes and messages are framed by and activate stronger altruistic values.

For example, we support recycling because it saves money that can be spent on key local services, such as community healthcare and education, but do not support recycling schemes that reward householders through vouchers redeemable at shops that encourage further consumption.

Working from values disscussion paper

We have released our first discussion paper entitled Working from Values. In it we call for more to be done to engage communities by appealing to, and building on, our more altruistic or common values.

We believe this approach provides a solid foundation upon which social change on the scale required can be realised.
