I set up Tayside Recyclers in 1992 in response to the astonishing level of resources that are wasted, which I just couldn't ignore.
Waste is a community issue, we all produce it. In a sense it belongs to us, so why throw it away? Let's share it, re-use it!
We are a community reuse project in Dundee that fixes up and sells second-hand items to people on lower incomes. Washing machines, fridges, beds, sofas, office furniture, prams, lawn mowers and more are all sold on and given a new lease of life.
We serve local people, businesses and organisations. We’re funded by just bringing stuff in, sorting it out and selling it; we don’t receive any grants.
For me, it was an enterprise issue; there was value out there waiting to be realised. During the last 15 years we have generated well over £1 million and are now turning over in excess of £200,000 every year.
The sheer volume and weight of ‘waste’ we have turned round is immense; but it is only possible through involving people. We currently employ six members of staff and 25 volunteers, including work placements with special needs, open prisoners and ex-offenders.
Doing this for 15 years and to have survived through thick and thin has just been so rewarding. And it’s all down to the donors of waste, our staff and of course the thousands of customers who buy the stuff.
