Best Practice

Is best practice working?

Our natural environment underpins our food, lifestyles, and economy; it keeps us healthy and enables well-being, inspiration and creativity. As a society we have the ambition, creativity and wisdom to enable a wonderful, equitable and flourishing world.

Yet we are currently living in a world that is stretched beyond environmental limits. Furthermore we have a struggling economy, rising unemployment, and rioting on our streets. In the UK inequality is at its highest in recorded history whilst child well-being is the poorest in the western world. At a local level, communities that most need support are seeing their funding dry up and vital services cut.

Many of the environmental and social challenges we face are being caused by the same structures and frameworks that influence and reinforce our values, identity and society itself. Great work is going on by charities, businesses and government but only at the edges of an overall worsening picture and often in isolation from one another.

These approaches or current ‘Best Practice’ appear increasingly inadequate to cope with the issues facing the world today.
