Waste Watch keep London recycling

24 February 2010

Waste Watch is working in five London boroughs on projects designed to increase recycling.

Our staff are monitoring, analysing and promoting new and trial recycling services in Havering, Islington, Enfield, Bexley and Haringey, ensuring that the residents understand how they work.

In Havering, we are publicising improved recycling service for residents living in flats. In Islington, we've conducted an audit of the borough's trial of on-street recycling facilities, analysing the waste, surveying users and observing how the service is used.

In Bexley, attendance at re-use centres has increased following a change in residual waste collection. We're working at the re-use centres to engage with users to understand how to improve the centres, and train site staff.

Finally, in Haringey, we are consulting with residents, caretakers and other stakeholders to help introduce a flats recycling service, as well as investigating ways of improving the borough-wide recycling service through effective communication.

Commenting on the projects, Tim Burns, Waste Watch's Head of Community Engagement said, "It is really important that local authorities continue to expand and tailor their recycling schemes to meet the needs of their residents. Waste Watch helps local authorities achieve their targets by making sure changes to services are effective and well communicated."
