£20,000 for Future Friendly heroes
18 November 2009
The launch of the 3rd annual Future Friendly Awards marks the start of a nationwide search for people and families who are making a difference to their local community by championing a more sustainable lifestyle.
Here at Waste Watch, we want to encourage entries to shine a light on the fantastic efforts that people of all ages and backgrounds across the UK are making to protect the environment.
The awards feature two categories. The first, which is new to this year's awards, is 'The Future Friendly Family Award'. This is looking to reward the UK's most 'Future Friendly' family for the actions they have taken to save energy, water and reduce waste. The award isn't just about big projects. Anything - from growing a vegetable patch in the back-garden, to taking steps to reduce the energy that is used in the home - could be in with a chance. The winner will receive a bespoke eco home makeover worth up to £10,000.
The second is the 'Future Friendly Community Award'. This is for local champions who have brought their community together and inspired them to reduce their environmental impact. Previous winners have included an online 'swap shop' for baby equipment and a school (pictured) where pupils with moderate to profound learning difficulties took on a range of green projects. The winner will receive a £10,000 bursary to further their good work.
Each category will provide five finalists. Inspiring short films will be made showcasing the finalists' work. A public vote will then decide which entry will win each category.
Future Friendly is a partnership between sustainability experts Waste Watch, the Energy Saving Trust and Waterwise, and household brands Ariel, Lenor, Fairy, Flash and Duracell. It aims to inspire people to live more sustainable lives through saving energy and water and reducing waste.
Anyone over 16 years of age can enter the Awards, with entries closing at midnight on 31 December 2009. To find out more about Future Friendly, enter the Awards, or nominate a group you think deserves recognition, log on to www.futurefriendly.co.uk
