Going for Gold in East London
22 June 2009
Waste Watch has been chosen by waste management company Shanks to provide communications support to the East London Waste Authority partnership until 2012.
Waste Watch was selected as a third sector partner on the back of our work in the Western Riverside waste authority region in south and west London where recycling rates have trebled since 2002.
We are now working with the London boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Havering, Newham and Redbridge, as well as Shanks and the East London Waste Authority, to help the region achieve similar success.
We have so far developed a three-year communications strategy setting measurable targets to increase recycling and reduce overall waste over the next three years. Core to this will be:
- Strengthening the partnership through closer cross-working
- Supporting the boroughs by promoting their recycling services
- Enabling grassroots community action on waste through a local volunteer, schools and community outreach programme
In developing the partnership, we have produced a communications protocol, annual work plan and branding guidelines for the partners.
To coincide with Recycle Week 2009, we have launched a brand new website - recycleforyourcommunity.com - providing residents with a hub of useful information about recycling. The website includes many interactive features, including an online events form which allows residents to publicise their own local green events.
We are also supporting the boroughs with the roll-out of improved recycling services, such as Barking and Dagenham's new wheelie bin collection scheme, where we are providing the council with a team of Waste Education Officers.
Sam Jarvis, Head of Communications at Waste Watch, said: "Waste Watch has built up a great deal of experience now of supporting waste partnerships and bringing about real changes in resident behaviour through our hands-on, practical and collaborative approach. We're looking to really get residents involved so local people are at the heart of encouraging others to recycle and reduce waste."
