Training environmental outreach workers of the future

8 August 2008

Waste Watch's first Community Engagement training session in Wales took place in July. The training has been running in response to the number of people working in recycling, sustainability and education who are fascinated by our outreach work over the UK and wanted to learn the same skills.

Catherine Doran, Head of Programmes at Waste Watch said: "Educators come across our outreach team in action at events and see first-hand how it can draw a community in, and help people learn new things in a fun, familiar environment. But they don't have the tools or the confidence to run and develop outreach programmes themselves."

Community Engagement training gives educators the practical tools they need to communicate messages effectively through outreach work, and helps them to measure the success of the projects they run.

Cynthia Hughes, from Sustainable Gwynedd Gynaladwy Cyf, attended the training session in Wales and can't wait to put what she learned into action.

"Thank you once again for delivering such an interesting course," she said. "Because we are a voluntary group, with limited funding, it is very difficult for us to actually buy props etc., but all the games you showed were easily assembled, and best of all they were fun."
