Aim
An introduction to waste management for people responsible for waste and recycling in their organisation. This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to help your organisation, reduce waste, maximise recycling rates and minimise your costs.

Suitable for
The course is broad-ranging and relevant to participants from local authority staff to shop floor workers, facilities managers, office staff, cleaners, contractors, warehouse operatives and students. The Waste Awareness Certificate course will benefit anyone with an interest in maximising their recycling rates and minimising waste management costs, while learning how to deal with waste safely and legally.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the course you will understand:

  • what waste is,
  • how and where waste is created;
  • how to reduce your organisation's waste and maximise recycling; and
  • your legal responsibilities around waste.

Content
The course uses case studies and best practice examples to help you improve waste management and minimise the cost of waste disposal. Participants receive a reference booklet and if you complete the course successfully you are awarded a Chartered Institution of Wastes Management accredited certificate.

  • different types of waste;
  • your legal responsibilities for waste;
  • how to conduct a waste audit to identify cost savings;
  • how to reduce, reuse and recycle waste;
  • how to dispose of waste; and
  • how to handle, move and store waste safely.
