Another green step for TK Maxx

4 July 2008

Like other high street shops and supermarkets, TK Maxx is working hard to reduce its environmental impact and carbon footprint.

The retailer is already committed to greener technologies; it uses the UK's largest electric lorry for its deliveries and uses cunning aerodynamic designs to make its other lorries more energy efficient.

Now TK Maxx are taking steps to reduce their carbon emissions by minimising their own office waste, recycling as much as possible and getting staff on board to green their offices.

TK Maxx asked Waste Watch to help by auditing their existing recycling facilities and assessing staff recycling habits at four of the company's back office sites, including the head office, distribution centre and two store offices.

The results showed staff were confused about which materials could be recycled, not helped by a lack of signage, meaning that the wrong materials often ended up in the wrong bin.

But the survey revealed that TK Maxx employees were firmly behind the new environmental initiatives. "We found that 79% of the staff interviewed wanted the company to address climate change and 85% wanted more recycling facilities in the office", said Geeta Kulshrestha, Senior Consultant at Waste Watch.

Having presented the findings and recommendations to TK Maxx, Waste Watch was subsequently asked to design communications materials, including a staff presentation and a training DVD script, to help staff develop good waste prevention and recycling habits.
