Chef Gordon Le Rotter's food waste show
11 February 2008
Waste Watch is helping Kent County Council capture the imagination of pupils around the issue of food waste at 56 local schools.
Waste Watch's education team developed an interactive theatre show, starring eccentric chef, Gordon Le Rotter, who loves food but hates waste. The project builds on WRAP's national Love Food Hate Waste campaign, which encourages people to enjoy the food they buy and take some easy steps to cut down on how much is wasted.
Together with his glove puppet, Sous Chef Pierre, Gordon inspires Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils to reduce, reuse and recycle their food waste. Pupils accompany Gordon to a supermarket made of oversized recycled props, cook with him in the larger-than-life kitchen, and recycle food waste in the compost bin. Gordon and Pierre offer pots of advice on reducing and avoiding food and packaging waste, conserving energy and water when preparing food, and recycling leftovers by composting them in the garden.
The show culminates with an interactive quiz that allows pupils to demonstrate what they have learned. Each school receives two free compost bins and five small caddies, along with a 'Little Rotters' Composting Handbook, which provides a step-by-step guide for teachers to set up their compost bins at school. The handbook also contains lots of useful classroom activities and teachers' notes.
