Wastebusters training day in essex

On Sunday 11 December, Waste Watch will be running a training day for Wastebusters volunteers in Colchester, Essex.

On Sunday 11 December, Waste Watch will be running a training day for Waste Busters volunteers in Colchester, Essex.

Waste Busters is a waste reduction campaign, managed by Waste Watch in partnership with the Essex Waste Prevention Partnership. The campaign aims to reduce the amount of organic waste that is sent to landfill.

Volunteer Waste Busters are taught about the fundamentals of home composting, the issue of food waste in the UK, and how to reduce food waste in the home. After completing their training, they spend time engaging their local community around these issues.

Waste Busters are asked to devote a suggested 30 hours per year to the scheme, which can include any activity from attending roadshows at local food and gardening events to simply chatting to their neighbours over the garden fence!

The scheme is a great opportunity to meet new people, learn valuable skills and make a positive contribution to the environment and community. In addition to full training, all travel expenses will be covered and members will receive a free 12-month subscription to the Garden Organic charity on completion of 10 hours volunteering.

County Councillor Kevin Bentley, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Waste and Recycling said: ‘The Waste Busters scheme shows that with a little knowledge and help, we can all do our bit to make Essex a greener place to live. Volunteering is a brilliant way to meet new people and learn valuable skills. So why not join the team and make a positive contribution to your community and environment?’

Waste Buster volunteer Susan Broadhurst said: ‘The training was very informative and certainly got you thinking about recycling and not being wasteful. The great interaction you get from the public is amazing and you find not only do you give tips and advice but you receive it too. You get to go to some lovely places and share your knowledge with others and hopefully with passing that knowledge on we can all help in reducing waste and recycling more’

The training day will take place on Sunday 11 December from 9.30am-4.30pm at the Oak Tree Centre, 252 Harwich Road, Colchester, Essex CO4 3DH.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided and travel expenses will be paid.
